Gross Regional Domestic Product in (GRDP) Central Kalimantan increased at a rapid rate until the Asian crisis in 1997. However, the Province was less seriously affected by the crisis than Indonesia as a whole, with a fall in. GRDP in 1999 of 6.92 percent, compared to 14.22 in Indonesian GDP. Nevertheless, the Province's total exports declined by more than half from previous peaks. The recovery appears to have been slower than in the rest of Indonesia, with the GRDP growth rate in 2001 lower than in the country as a whole. GRDP per capita is higher than in most other Indonesian provinces except Jakarta and provinces with major oil and gas production. However, price levels are also higher, as seen from the fact that the "Monthly Average Minimum Physical Requirement Unmarried Workers" is the second highest in the country after Jakarta. Literacy levels are among the highest in the country.
